WELCOME TO THE VANTAGE POINT (HOMECOMING EDITION) @ COMPANY OF ANGELS (THEATRICAL PRODUCTION)

Cast Photo: Welcome to the Vantage Point (Homecoming Edition) @ Company of Angels

In 2021, my theater company, Company of Angels, received a generous scholarship from the Hollywood Fringe Festival to present an original show called, “Welcome to the Vantage Point”. For two long years, we developed, toured and refined the production. Now, we are finally presenting the show in our very own theater on the mainstage. This show has truly been a labor of love and I am so pleased to present our production with an all new Angel City Improv cast.

SHOW DESCRIPTION: Take a theatrical journey through a diverse and inclusive landscape of American theater with our talented BIPOC ensemble. There are no scripts in our show. Instead, our cast members will use your audience suggestions to improvise one singular story. Then, without hesitation, they will take your story suggestion and reinterpret it using the iconic theatrical styles of three preeminent BIPOC American playwrights, Luis Alfaro, David Henry Hwang, and Lorraine Hansberry. Our diverse cast will explore the universal themes at the heart of each playwright's work and amplify the BIPOC point-of-view through comedy storytelling.

April 8 - April 30, Saturdays @ 8PM, Sundays @ 2PM. Click here for more info and tickets.

LOS ANGELES OPERA, “PELLEAS ET MELISANDE” (OPERA STAGE PRODUCTION)

I’m thrilled to return to the Los Angeles Opera to close out the 2022-2023 season in Debussy's one-of-a-kind enigmatic masterpiece Pelléas et Mélisande, conducted by Music Director James Conlon at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The production, which originated at Scottish Opera, was created by the internationally acclaimed director David McVicar.. It’s an enigmatic tale of hidden longing and lingering suspicion. Pelléas et Mélisande is "consistently excellent" Lost in the forest, a prince encounters an ethereal beauty with a mysterious past (and lush locks that would make Rapunzel envious).

Now playing March 25 – April 16. Click here for more info and tix.

SOMETHING BLUE 在好久好久以前 (SHORT FILM)

I recently had the opportunity to connect to my Cantonese heritage when I played “Auntie Tam” in Director Jinsui Song’s short film, “Something Blue”.

Storyline: On the occasion of her cousin's wedding, a young woman is forced to confront her childhood trauma. Supported by the Panavision New Filmmaker Program. | Cantonese and English with English subtitles

On set with DP Jacqueline Chan

EXPOSED (SHORT FILM)

Many thanks to Director Dax Phelan and Producer Eric M. Klein for casting me in their very timely short film, Exposed. This subject matter is definitely resonant as we all enter our third consecutive year living with Covid-19. Never would I have imagined that I would need to learn how to administer a PCR Test on film, but that is the training I received for my small part in this project. Please be safe and take care.

FEATURE ARTICLE IN SHOUTOUT LA

Corinne Chooey_Shoutout LA.JPG

I had the distinct honor of being featured in a recent issue of Shoutout LA. Please click the link below to read the article and learn more about my family, my creative process and my work as a teaching artist at Company of Angels.

Click here to view the article in Shoutout LA.

“…My decision to start a family of my own is the most important factor behind my success as an artist.”

“…All four of my grandparents were amazing individuals. They were each community leaders in San Francisco’s Chinatown during the 1960’s and 1970’s and made great sacrifices to help support their fellow community members. Through them, I learned the value collaborating with and helping others.”

“…The public knew my grandfather as an journalist, activist, and community leader. I remember him as an incredible visionary who worked tirelessly for the rights of others and taught me that one’s challenges in life cannot deter them from achieving success. He impressed upon me the belief that everyone has a story to tell and they have a right to be heard. I am grateful for the time that I was able to spend with my grandfather and often look to him for inspiration in all aspects of my work as an artist.”

MOMMY GO ZOOM (COMEDY VIDEO)

It’s been awhile since I created my last digital video. As some of you may know, I produced a few digital series featuring some of my funniest, most talented friends. This past year has been challenging for everyone as we learn to adapt to life during a global pandemic. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all our essential workers and first responders. Without your dedication and hard work, we would all be lost.

I was invited to develop this video through my sketch comedy group’s writers’ room at The Color Collective. It draws upon my experience as a working mom during our current shelter-in-place mandate. Directed by Keisha Zollar and featuring MORE of my funny friends, Peter Pasco and Anastasia Washington, it also stars my youngest son. I hope you enjoy it!

Whether it’s safe from ICE, a school shooter, or gentrification. In the tenth anniversary of our LA VIEWS play festival,Company of Angels explores the meaning of sanctuary (protection, fairness, equality, and refuge) as played out in the lives of Angelenos. In an evening of seven short plays by local playwrights, "LA Views X: Sanctuary" examines the American ideal of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness within the current political climate in which, at best, many feel unwelcome, and at worst, are targets of hate.

HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL: THE COLOR COLLECTIVE  (SKETCH COMEDY)

I'm performing with my sketch team, The Color Collective, at the Hollywood Fringe Festival throughout June.

The Color Collective is a comedy variety show featuring women and POCs in everything from music and dance to stand-up and sketch comedy, The Color Collective strives to be a show for all people, where we can tackle topics that typically aren’t (or can’t) be covered by others. Our goal is to make the audience laugh and see past our color or gender and to be sure that the point of view of minorities and women are always heard.

Inspired by In Living Color, Chappelles’s Show, and other variety shows of the past, we show that smart, unique comedy can come in all shades. We want to highlight artists that may not always get the same spotlight as others of a different color or gender.

WORLD PREMIERE! In 1956, a giant kaiju (monster) destroys Tokyo and sends seismic waves of fear, anger and ignorance through generations. Facts are questioned, history is alternatively written and modern politics is set against primal religion in this ferociously civilized cautionary tale of two nations coping with their own damaged legacies. Can humanity reckon with the monsters that rise against us, the ones that live within us all?

Akuma Shin @ Sacred Fools

“…a play that ricochets between parodic mockumentary, whimsical alternative history, allusive movie-geek trivia game and moody metaphysical thriller.”- LAWeekly

Terrific performances and an ingenious production design…” - StageSceneLA

“Director Scott Leggett weaves together stylish video projections, spectacular lighting effects and searing, high-decibel sound to theatrically suggest what the production cannot literally show — the monumental, pulse-pounding physical presence of Akuma-shin.” - LAWeekly

"David Wilcoxis excellent as Buckley; more of an incarnation than an impersonation, he captures the man’s mannerisms and essence in a caustically witty portrayal. Levi is also very good as Capote, aptly approximating Truman’s vocal delivery; he’s particularly fine in his monologue about encountering the beast in Vietnam. Parducci brings bluster to the pugnacious Mailer, but is even better as Curtis LeMay, grimly preparing for a bomb drop that will likely kill many civilians.”- Stage Raw

“The production benefits from the excellent stagecraft of the artistic staff…” - Paul Myrvold’s Theater Notes

THREE CHEN SISTERS - 陈氏三姐妹  - EPISODE THREE ("Thanksgiving Episode")

I had the great pleasure of working with up and coming director, Elaine Wong, on her digital series, "Three Chen Sisters". In this wacky ensemble comedy, I play the oldest of three Chinese sisters who must abide by her mother's traditional expectations to wed, while attempting to develop her own sense of independence. The talented cast also includes Joanne ChewHana Wu, Grace Shen, Anthony Tai, Juston Graber and Christian Henley. Our excellent Director of Photography is Anthony Kai Tung Liu and our amazing Composer is Peter Lam.

PARIS WINDOW - FEATURE FILM

I'm in a new independent feature film directed by Amanda Kramer and you're invited to our special screening on September 6 @ 7:00 PM!

PARIS WINDOW is set entirely in the apartment of infatuated adult siblings Julian and Sunny, PARIS WINDOW follows the damaging effects of a series of hypnosis informercials on the socially and emotionally stunted pair. With creeping intensity, delusional brother and sister turn on each other as Julian becomes convinced he’s the victim of a conspiracy when Sunny begins dating a man who looks exactly like him.

PARIS WINDOW is a hypnogogic psychological thriller blending the single set claustrophobia of Polanski’s REPULSION with the doppelgänger obsession of Dostoyevsky’s THE DOUBLE and the hallucinatory paranoia of Cronenberg’s VIDEODROME.

Directed by Amanda Kramer, starring Noel David Taylor and Sophie Kargman, co-starring Anna Cordell and Gina Piersanti, scored by Ben Babbitt, shot in Chinatown, Los Angeles.
